TVM youth harvests 50 kg okra per day, proves farming gives decent income
Thiruvananthapuram: Though Naruvamoodu native Ananthu R is a BCom graduate, he is passionate about agriculture. After completing SSLC, he took up the role of a farmer on seeing his father Radhakrishnan, a tailor, struggling to make the ends meet.
Ananthu leased 50 cents of land in Pallichal and cultivated various crops including spinach, long beans, cucumber and yam. However, he is focusing on okra farming now. He manages to harvest about 50 kilograms of okra every day.
A farmers’ community in Pallichal supplies seeds and other help. Ananthu manages to pay Rs 10,000 for the leased land with the profit earned from cultivation. Though he is a busy farmer, Ananthu has completed Pus Two and BCom with first class. Now he is waiting for the result of MCom.
Ananthu starts his day with farm works and continues the work till evening. He meets the expense for his and sister’s education and household requirements with the profit earned from farming. He keeps attending PSC exams but has no plans to leave agriculture.
