Thrissur: Chenthrappinni native Sageer, a pandal worker, found it hard to make the ends meet during the lockdown times. Sageer Palliparambil was the owner of Upahara pandal works. He made an artificial pond using the iron frames and tarpaulin for pandal works and grew fish in it. He also got stunning harvest from the fish pond made on the house terrace on a trial basis.
Sageer made the pond on terrace due to lack of space. He also set up motor and other equipment for purifying the water in the pond. He deposited 1000 fingerlings of GIFT tilapia fish. However, some of them died in a few days as he had no previous experience in fish farming.
The remaining fish grew gradually and by the time of harvest each of them weighed around 500 grams. Over 300 kilogram fish could be harvested in total. Sageer sold them for Rs 230 per kilogram.
Though pandal works resumed after the lockdown ended, Sageer is planning to expand his new source of income. He is going to construct a big tank for growing fish.
