Venjaramoodu (Thiruvananthapuram): Three women farmers from Pullambara are scaling new heights in vegetable cultivation blazing a trail. Ajithakumari, S Kumari and Jayamalini are the three ladies who reaped gold from cabbage, cauliflower and beetroot farming.
Agriculture officer Neena Lenin encouraged the ladies to start farming. She also sent them for training to learn the farming methods. Thus the trio initiated farming on two acres of leased land.
It was for the first time, winter vegetables like cabbage and cauliflower were cultivated in the place. The locals also were surprised to see different varieties of crops grow on their land. They used only organic fertilizers.
Among the three, Kumari also cultivated paddy for the first time. The lady farmers opined that harvesting the crops which was produced by toiling in the land gives a lot of satisfaction. They are planning to continue with farming.
