Thomas growing grapes on terrace
Vaikom: The sight of grapevines in full bloom is not confined to misty hillsides; grapes can be grown on lake shores as well.
Thomas of Udayanapuram, near the Vembanad Lake, is growing grapes on the terrace of his house. For the locals, the grapevines that have flowered is a wonderful sight.
The plants, that begin blooming in the winter, give sweet grapes for around six months. Thomas and family cultivate around 25 kg of grapes from two plants. He does not use any pesticide on them. Cow dung and bone meal are used as manure.
Thomas planted four grape saplings on his terrace four years ago. Two of them bloomed and bore fruit within six months. People even visit his house to see the grapes.
Along with Thomas, his wife Sofia, and children Justin, Jaini, and Jaiti take care of the plants.
