Balussery (Kozhikode): Though the students could not come to the school due to the COVID lockdown, a teacher was busy cultivating vegetables on the roof of the school building.
Rineesh Kumar, a teacher at Government Higher Secondary School here, regularly visited the school even in lockdown and maintained the vegetable garden.
Rineesh used grow bags and pipes supplied by Krishi Bhavan for the vegetable farming. He brought the fertilizers from his house. He has grown various vegetables including spinach, okra, ash gourd, bitter gourd, cucumber, long beans and tomato. As he takes care of the plants daily, they get an attractive yield. Krishi Bhavan also provides all support for the initiative.
Rineesh initiated vegetable farming in order to use the produce for preparing food for the students. However, as cooking midday meals at school is not practical, they decided to supply the vegetables to the students for an affordable rate.
Rineesh has plans to involve the children in vegetable farming after schools resume normal functioning.
