Sindhu's dairy farm produces 200 litres of milk; bags award
Kattappana: Sindhu, native of Santhigram in Irattayar, has been selected for the Idukki district Ksheera Sahakari award instituted by the Dairy Development Department.
At present, Sindhu is the dairy farmer who produces largest quantity of milk in the district. More than 60,000 litres of milk produced from Sindhu's farm is being sent to Shantigram Milk Society.
Sindhu, who started dairy farming with a single cow 5 years back, now has 20 cows in her farm. The cows yield 160 to 200 litres of milk each day.
Twenty cows belonging to high reproductive efficiency breeds Swiss brown, HF and Jersey are there in Sindhu's farm. The cow shed is cleaned at 3 am itself before starting the milking process. A generator also is installed in the farm to operate the instruments when power supply is gone.
The milk is delivered at the society by Sindhu's husband Anil Kumar, who works as a taxi driver. The couple says that more than Rs 15 lakh can be earned from rearing cows. Grass for feeding the cows are grown in two acres of land. Sindhu's husband Anil Kumar and children Anju and Ansu help her in rearing the cows.
