Though a postgraduate in mathematics, Sherin Ashraf from Kochi decided to become an entrepreneur. Due to her love for flowers, Sherin chose orchid business as her career. Sherin earns upto Rs 10 lakh per month through orchid business. She has been active in this business for over 10 years.
Hobby turns profession
Sherin said that she was fond of flowers and plants since childhood which is why she turned to this business. She already has a collection of orchids.
She thought about the scope of a profitable business after her friends and relatives encouraged her hobby. Thus she started her first orchid farm in Kalamassery in 1994.
The tissue culture lab was started in 1998. Later, both the farm and lab were shifted to Pukkattupady due to spatial limitations.
Initial investment in the business was Rs 5000. Sherin also obtained financial aid of Rs 30,000 from Bank of Baroda.
Plantain saplings are mainly produced in the tissue culture lab. Also there are 104 types of orchids. Sherin started a shop named 'Pots and Petal' near Metro Pillar 91 in Aluva to make available orchids, indoor plants, tissue culture plantains and pots in a single shop. An outlet of the shop is functioning in Lulu Mall also.
Today, over 40 employees are working in Hafi Orchid farm. Orchids never lose their market value. This plant has brought tremendous changes in the gardening concepts of Keralites. It is of high demand in the domestic markets.
The orchids in the farm are imported from China, Spain, Singapore and other foeign countries. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, all such transactions have been stopped for two months. However, plenty of orchids are available at the farm to meet the demands in the local market, Sherin said.
Way to success
"One cannot start orchid business all of a sudden. It requires a lot of dedication and hard work. I developed my business in the same way," Sherin said.
