Poongode village reaps rich rice harvest despite water shortage
Kalikavu: The people of Poongode village in Malappuram district have reaped a rich harvest of paddy braving the acute water shortage, thanks to the determination of Manjeri Abdul Salam, a traditional farmer in the village.
He led the entire village to start cultivation in the paddy fields and the seeds were sown three months back. The paddy was harvested on Tuesday.
The cultivation started expecting normal North-East Monsoon. But as the weather turned hostile, the farmers struggled to fetch water for the paddy. They brought water from faraway places and spend sleepless nights protecting the farm from animals.
The efforts made by Salam and his team did not go in vain.
Salam, meanwhile, set aside the rice in one field for the students of Poongode Government LP school who came there to study about paddy cultivation.
The cultivation was done on the land owned by V P Muhammad Ali.
