Man turns houseboat into 'floating farm'
Alappuzha: A man has proved that even a houseboat can be turned into a farm. Thathampally native Jose Arattumpally cultivated vegetables and pepper on the top of his house boat and turned into a floating farm on the backwaters.
Jose thought about the idea after the tourism sector was affected in the COVID lockdown and the houseboat could not be used for entertaining tourists. As his source of income stopped, Jose decided to start vegetable farming on his compound.
Being the secretary of Houseboat Owners Federation, an idea flashed into Jose's mind. Thus he used the top portion of his houseboat for vegetable farming. The houseboat is anchored near Punnamada finishing point. He started cultivation at a cost of Rs 30,000 one month ago.
Okra, brinjal, Chinese potato, green chilli, bush pepper, birds' eye chilli and other vegetables are planted in 250 grow bags on the top of houseboat. They have started bearing fruits. His wife Suni and children Kesiya and Anosh also help him with farming.
