Idukki man scripts success saga with sapling nursery
Arakkulam (Idukki): A man has proved that agricultural ventures can offer a livelihood for us. Arakkulam native Johnson is delighted to get recognition from the Horticulture Mission under the central government for his farming venture.
Johnson has been running a farm nursery in Arakkulam for the last 30 years. The nursery had won several honours from the state and central governments. However, now it has become the first nursery in Idukki to be recognised by the National Horticulture Mission.
Johnson started nursery with rubber saplings. The efficiency in developing rubber sapling through budding inspired Johnson to open a nursery. With this, he realised that this is the suitable career for him. Later, he started growing fruit plants too.
The farmers started purchasing saplings from the nursery. Gradually, Johnson thought of getting approval of the government. Thus he started producing saplings as per the guidelines of the agriculture department and various agencies of the government.
Johnson's nursery was already recognised by the Rubber Board, agriculture department, State Horticulture Mission and Coconut Development Board. Now the nursery has been recognised by the National Horticulture Mission.
Some of the jackfruit and mango varieties in the nursery received three star rating too. The nursery is located on a five-acre land. Pepper, areca nut, coffee, cocoa, nutmeg, rambutan and mangosteen also are being cultivated along with other crops here.
Johnson said that the farmers who purchase the saplings from here contact him after they start yielding fruits. Johnson graduated in Economics from Newman College in Thodupuzha. His wife Bincy, children Josmy, Jismy, Jasmine and Jobin also support him.
