Idukki farmer reaps gold by intercropping apple with pepper
Kattappana: Miracle Farm owner Bijumon Antony shows how to reap gold by cultivating apple. Currently, apple farms exist only in Munnar and Marayur regions in Idukki. The farmers usually believe that the climate in other locations is not suitable for apple cultivation.
Biju proved that the imported saplings of apple trees grow well and give good yield in other regions of the high range also. He nurtured over 400 apple trees in his farm. His apples have huge demand as he shares the videos of the farm through social media and his YouTube channel.
Intercropping of apples
Biju cultivates apples that can be intercropped with pepper plants. The saplings were exported from Germany and Italy. These varieties offer a good yield even when the temperature is at 45-degree celsius. The plants are cultivated in the ultra high density farming method. Upto thousand saplings can be planted in one acre of land.
There are 14 different varieties of apples including Tropical Sweet, Summer Zone, Sachin Co, Gala, Redlum, Jeromine, Redlove Dark Brown and Granny Smith apples in Biju’s farm. The plants will bear fruit within a year if cared properly.
Many farmers who faced loss due to the price drop of cardamom and pepper are approaching Biju to know more about apple farming. Bijumon, who received the state government’s Karshakothama Award in 2019, is always ready to impart knowledge on apple farming to those who seek his guidance.
