Farmers harvest 20 tonnes of vegetables at Ottapalam
Palakkad: When Vishu round the corner, farmers at Ottapalam have made a record harvest of vegetables. Nearly 30 farmers in the block panchayat have harvested 20 tonnes of vegetables here.
Variety of vegetables including ‘Kani Vellari’ (golden cucumber), gourd and ladies finger were produced by the farmers. They have cultivated the vegetables under Vegetable Development Project of agriculture department.
It is reported that 7500 kg cucumber, 10,000 kg pumpkin, 5000 kg gourd and 2000 kg ladies finger have been taken to market from here.
According to agriculture department officials, 12 tonnes of vegetables were cultivated at Thrikkadareeri.
Farmers market the vegetables through Haritha Sree weekly market in order to avoid the exploitation of mediators. Compared to public market, farmer can earn 20 percent profit from weekly market.
Weekly markets are open at Vaniyamkulam and Ambalapara.
“The organic vegetables cultivated here have great demand. People from Thrissur are visiting the farmlands to purchase vegetables,” said the agriculture department officials.
Nearly 20 tonnes of vegetables were produced here in last year also. Local government bodies had run 10 centres to market these vegetables. Meanwhile, this time only three weekly markets are open to sell the vegetables.
“Agriculture department here also launched a mobile vegetable shop to transport vegetables to shops and customers. Vegetables which are left unsold in the mobile shop will be sold out in the public market,” said block panchayat president S Sivaraman.
Ottapalam block Agriculture department assistant director Ashanath informed that the harvest of the vegetables is on progress in the vegetable farms here.
