Engineering graduate reaps success from dairy farming
Karukachal (Kottayam): Though Jayakrishnan studied about circuits and diodes in college, he is too passionate about cows. The 28-year-old engineering graduate from Nedumkunnam thus took up dairy farming as his career. He bought a cow soon after completing his 3-year diploma in Electronics and Communications from Panthalam NSS College. Everyone who heard the news ridiculed him first.
Jayakrishnan started farming by raising the cow in his aunt’s cow shed. With his continuous effort and determination, the number of cows increased to 8 within 3 years. Also there were about 8 calves. It is Jayakrishnan himself who does all the chores in the farm including cleaning, milking, feeding cows and cutting grass. But he utilizes all types of modern machines in farming.
Jayakrishnan is of the opinion that dairy farming is better than any other white collar jobs, when it comes to satisfaction and financial benefits. He also plans to expand his farm and increase production, so that he can meet the milk requirements of his village too.
Though dairy farming is challenging, one can earn well and lead a better life with hard work and support of the Dairy Development Department, said Jayakrishnan. His father Madhusoodanan Pillai and mother Sudhakumari also are very supportive to Jayakrishnan's dreams.
