Engineering graduate dedicates life to promote fruit orchards
Ernakulam: An electrical engineering graduate has dedicated his life for spreading the goodness of fruit orchards. I. B. Manoj from Edvanakkad is all busy highlighting the importance of orchards for agricultural and food security. A graduate from Thrissur Government Engineering College, Manoj was influenced by environmentalist Johnsy master in 1991.
Though Manoj runs a data entry company at Palarivattom for a living, he is passionate about agriculture. He actively engages in collecting local fruit seeds, preparing saplings, imparting knowledge about fruit orchard and similar awareness programmes. He also maintains a fruit orchard including 200 jackfruit trees at his land in Edvanakkad in Vypin.
Manoj is of the opinion that fruit orchard is inevitable for preserving soil and water and for agriculture and food security. When grains require irrigation, maintenance and a large investment, fruit trees need irrigation and mulching for only two years. Fruits are nutritious foods and do not require energy to cook. They ripen with solar energy.
Manoj’s service is available at schools, colleges, barren lands and fields. If there is a fruit orchard near an agriculture land, the soil becomes more fertile, he said. Those interested can approach Manoj for his advice and services.
