Pappinisseri (Kannur): Minister for Industries E. P. Jayarajan changes his working arena to agriculture once he reaches home. His residence at Aroli in Pappinisseri is rich in vegetable farming, dairy products and organic fertilizers. About one-acre land in his property has been dedicated for agriculture.
Pumpkin, ash gourd, cucumber, okra, snake gourd, bitter gourd, spinach, chilli, cabbage, cauliflower, long beans and all types of vegetables are cultivated in addition to various fruit trees like banana, mango, sapota and guava. They also rear cows and goats in another area of the plot for dairy products. About 75-80 litres of milk is supplied to the nearby milk society.
The seeds, fertilizers and other basic amenities required for cultivation was provided by the Krishi Bhavan at Pappinisseri. The department of agriculture had initiated a programme to prepare model organic kitchen garden in the residence of ministers. E. P. Jayarajan’s kitchen garden also has been made as part of the scheme.
Minister’s wife P. K. Indira is in charge of the kitchen garden. They have been maintaining cultivation for the past 18 years. On Sunday morning, minister harvested the vegetables from the garden on his compound.
Pappinisseri panchayat president K. Narayanan, District Assistant Director of Agriculture Mini P. John, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Director P. Jayarajan, Pappinisseri Agriculture Officer U. Prasannan and others were present during the harvesting.
