Kozhikode: A policeman has converted 1.5-acre barren land into a fertile land of paddy field. Karassery Kakkad native Salim Muttath, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Mukkam police station, reaped gold from cultivation through hard work.
Salim, along with his three friends, bought the land near his house only five years ago. According to the advice of Karassery agriculture officer Subha, they also received 50 kg seeds and subsidy included in the Sustainable Paddy Cultivation Development Scheme.
Salim sowed Matta Triveni seeds in the land. The earth was tilled in June and applied lime before sowing the seed. He followed organic method for cultivation. Bio fertilisers like cow dung were used for this.
Visiting the field is the first thing Salim would do every day. If he could not make it due to tight schedule of work, he would send his children Russell and Ziya to the field. Besides paddy cultivation, Salim has also tried banana plantation and poultry farm. He is of the opinion that agriculture gives him comfort during the hectic work.
