50 types of water lilies, 60 types of moss roses... Engineer couple grows a paradise at home
Thrissur: An engineer couple residing near Thriprayar bridge have set up a garden in their house giving a visual treat for the passersby. Lotus, water lily, jasmine, moss rose and several other flowers are growing in the garden of Premkumar and Rajashree.
The couple used the 2.5-acre plot which includes their house for gardening and farming. Flowers, trees, medicinal herbs and vegetables are flourishing everywhere here. Over 60 types of plants are growing in ponds, plastic bowls, flowerpots, old fridges and on terrace.
Recently, a rare thousand petal lotus also bloomed in their garden. Premkumar's wife Rajashree is also a dancer, singer and entrepreneur. Their daughter Manu studies English literature and is a budding writer and son Rithu graduated from Edinburgh University in Scotland and is preparing for higher studies.
The garden has about 50 types of water lilies in different sizes and colours. Around 60 varieties of moss rose plants also can be seen here. However, they bloom less after the rainfall started. Cactus, jasmine, creepers, rose, marigold, coleus and other plants also are part of the garden.
Tamarind, jackfruit, mango, guava, Malabar tamarind, Spanish cherry, devil's tree and many foreign and local trees are on their compound. In addition to this, medicinal herbs like turmeric, ginger, betel, water hyssop and tree turmeric are nurtured.
Vegetables and tuber crops are cultivated on the compound and on terrace of the house. The mangroves and other naturally growing plants are nurtured without harming them. The couple also rear two Vechur cows. Rajashree is in charge of the farming activities.
