These little farmers cultivate vegetables for their school meals
Idukki: Upholding the importance of organically-grown vegetables, a group of children from Chakkupallam St.Dominic LP School has taken the initiative to cultivate vegetables. The vegetables are now used to prepare their noon meal at school.
They have been cultivating over 20 varieties of vegetables in the school compound.
These students have cultivated 500 kilogram of vegetables so far. The vegetables are grown in grow bags arranged in the school compound and the courtyard of a nearby church.
The students and teachers were surprised to see the bumber harvest from their garden. They harvested 150 kilo cabbage, 70 kilo brinjal, 75 kilo green chili and 60 kilo tomato.
Apart from this, cauliflower, beans, cowpeas, carrot and paddy were also cultivated here.
Rain shelter vegetable cultivation in 3 cent of land is also seen here. Chakkupallam Krishi Bhavan is assisting the students in the rain shelter farming.
A biodiversity park is also arranged in the school with the effort of the children and teachers.
The teachers and PTA are assisting the students in their agriculture mission.
School headmistress Sr. Lincy, Seed coordinator Sr Rosmy, teachers Angel, Stephy and PTA president Biju Pazhayamadam are actively support the students in maintaining their vegetable garden and biodiversity park here.
