The Onam markets will be rich with fresh organic vegetables produced by the farmers of over 50 regions in Nanniyode village in Thiruvananthapuram. Also there is a mothers’ collective that offers organic food through ‘Ruchirasam Amma Kitchen’ with the help of farmers.
More than 20 tonnes of organic vegetables will be harvested for this Onam. Bitter gourd, snake gourd, cucumber, long beans, spinach, okra, chilli, tomato, brinjal and other vegetables are cultivated in over 30-cent land.
Pacha Milk Society, Vattappankadu Mahatma Women Society’s forest farming, pure coconut oil production under the leadership of Nanniyode cooperative society and individual organic farms are functioning as part of Organic Village scheme.
More people are coming forward to join the organic farming as they realised that the organic products from Nanniyode has high demand in the market. Agricultural office and the gram panchayat also are offering them full support.
The major attraction of the organic village is the mothers’ collective ‘Ammakkoottam’ that prepares 100 delicacies for feast. Now they are in charge of cooking feast for wedding ceremonies in the area. Every day, hundreds of people flock to the village seeking the delicious feast prepared by the group.
Nanniyode agricultural officer S. Jayakumar said that they plan to ensure market for the agricultural products from Nanniyode. For this purpose, Onam special markets are arranged in Thiruvananthapuram Museum compound, Kowdiar Christ Nagar, Karakulam Sunday market ground and Nanniyode Agros outlet, he added.
