Organic Red Lady papaya fetches Rs 60 for ripe fruits, Rs 50 for raw ones
Among the different varieties of papaya, Red Lady is the most popular one. The name Red Lady is derived from the red flesh of the ripe fruit in contrast to the usual yellow colour. Red Lady is a foreign breed of papaya. The plant grows to a height of about 2.5 metres and fruits emerge all over it.
Papaya grows well in places where proper sunlight and water permeable soil are available. Fruits can be harvested within 6 months. About 50 fruits grow on a single plant. The weight of one fruit can be over 3 kilograms. Some plants produce upto 300 fruits. Papaya can be harvested for upto 1.5 years.
Farmers opined that Red Lady is a high yielding variety and one can earn upto Rs 10,000 monthly if 10 plants are cultivated. Raw fruits cultivated in organic method cost Rs 50 and ripe ones fetch upto Rs 60. As the fruit takes upto 10 days to ripe fully, it can be carried to distant places and exported to foreign countries.
Red Lady papaya is Taiwan native. The fruit is a rich source of vitamins and minerals. Many value added products like dry fruit, tutti frutti, jam, squash and other items can be prepared with it. The taste of Red Lady papaya cultivated in organic method is much better than those cultivated using chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
