Malappuram's own brand 'Karinchapadi watermelon' gains popularity
Malappuram: People of Malappuram are not mere consumers of watermelon brought from other states during the Eid season, but they have their own brand of watermelons cultivated in their place. The watermelon is farmed in Karinchapadi by Ameer Babu and team under A Grade vegetable cluster in Kuruva village. This year, they farmed four varieties of watermelon and shamam.
The star of the season is the watermelon variety called 'Anmol' which has green rind and yellow flesh. Its price four times more than the ordinary watermelons. However, most of the people are buying the yellow watermelon during the harvest period.
The lockdown has not affected the sales as direct sales and promotion through Facebook and WhatsApp are progressing. Watermelon is cultivated on a 10-acre land including own land and leased plot. Agriculture officer Shuhaib Thottiyan said that scientific methods are applied to farm watermelon in Karinchapadi.
Watermelon is cultivated from February to May in Karinchapadi. Farmers Retail Market facility of the state government also is utilized for sales. Mulching method introduced by the agriculture department is followed for precision irrigation and weed destruction.
