Loved for its unique colour, taste and aroma, 'Royal Red Jack' is still here
Royal Red Jack is a popular variety of jackfruit. The dark red fruits, intense sweetness and attractive aroma make Royal Red Jack different from other varieties. It offers high yield and the fruit weighs upto 10 kilogram. The jackfruit contains many large fruits inside and it ripens before monsoon.
The Royal Red Jack gained attention after a tree was found at a private plot near Pampady in Kottayam. The owner cleaned up the area and spotted the tree that was about 20 years old. It is believed that the jackfruit belongs to the family of 'Vakathanam Varikka', which is a local traditional variety of jackfruit.
The land owner has plans to produce saplings through budding and supply it to farmers. In this method, seeds of different varieties of jackfruit are germinated. Then buds collected from Royal Red Jack is pasted on these saplings. Within 3-4 months, the budded saplings will be ready for replanting in the orchards.
Water permeable soil and moderate sunlight are ideal for cultivating Royal Red Jack. The budded saplings can be planted at large flowerbeds after adding organic fertilizers.
In order to ensure steady growth, prune the branches once a year. Organic fertilizers can be applied by the beginning of monsoon season. Royal Red Jack bears fruit within 3-4 years. It is ideal for growing on house compounds and in orchards.
