Farmers impressed by 'Popoulu', the best banana variety to make crispy chips
Many farmers in Kerala are quite impressed by Popoulu banana. Narayanankutty, a farmer in Thrithala, said that Popoulu is the best banana variety to make chips.
“Popoulu is the best choice to make banana chips. It tastier than Nendran banana chips and also crispy like potato chips,” Narayanankutty said. He has been cultivating Popoulu banana for the last 5-6 years.
Popoulu is native to Polynesian islands in Pacific region. This banana variety grows within 10 months. It has high immunity. One bunch of banana contains upto 40 fruits. Popoulu is best to make chips, curry and other side dishes.
One kilogram chips can be made from only 2.25 kilogram of Popoulu banana while 3.25 kilogram Nendran banana is required to make one kilogram chips. Popoulu can be cultivated in the same method as Nendran banana, said Narayanankutty.
Dr P R Manju, a scientist at the Banana Research Station at Kannara in Thrissur, said that the climate and soil in Kerala are suitable for Popoulu farming. Saplings of this variety produced through tissue culture is sold the Research Station. One sapling costs Rs 30.
