When ordinary eggs have white shell, the shell of organic eggs are brown in colour. When ordinary eggs are sold for Rs 5, organic eggs cost Rs 7-8 per one egg. The buyers cannot identify the fraud from shop. The colour of egg shell changes only when it is soaked in water for some time. The colour is usually changed using chemicals and tea dust.
The source of coloured egg is the farms in Tamil Nadu. In a raid conducted by food safety officers at six places in Coimbatore, 3900 coloured eggs were seized. The fake organic eggs were found on Sunday when more quantity of meat and egg are usually sold.
The white eggs laid by leghorn chicken is commonly used for the fraud. Only the eggs that have a particular weight are exported. The light eggs are set aside. The frauds use these eggs for changing colour. Normally, organic eggs are smaller in size and lighter. However, leading farm brands never try this fraud as it will affect their reputation.
