Dream come true moment for farmer as organic vegetables for Onam survive rain havoc
Kundara: It was a dream come true moment for Kanjirakode native Pradeep when his organic crops survived the rain havoc. Okra, snake gourd, bitter gourd, long beans and green chilli yielded well whereas spinach was affected in rain. Pradeep’s organic vegetables are sold in various supermarkets from Kundara to Kollam.
Pradeep has a 3.5-acre paddy field. After the ramps to the field were closed, bringing tillers and fertilizers to the field and harvesting paddy became impossible. Thus he had to abandon the harvested paddy in the field.
After this, he switched to vegetable farming. First he cultivated spinach and then long beans, okra, bitter gourd and other crops. About 20 Red Lady papaya trees nurtured in the field gave good yield. He also rears Gyr breed cows from Gujarat.
Pradeep said that growing marigold flowers between vegetable plants will control pests. However, the flowers did not survive the heavy rain. On knowing his plight, minister Mercykutty Amma had offered all help for Pradeep.
