Avocado fetches upto Rs 200 per kg in market; it's worth a try
Avocado or butter fruit has high demand in the market these days. The farmers come forward to cultivate this fruit as it fetches attractive price. Avocado costs upto Rs 200 per kilogram. About 50-300 kilograms of avocado can be harvested from one tree.
The trees need only minimal maintenance and care. It is ideal to plant avocado saplings in May or by the end of monsoon. Choose the high yielding varieties of avocado for better results, said C Kiran, a fruit farmer from Kolavayal in Kalpetta.
Over 100 varieties of avocado are available in Kerala now. There are mainly three types of avocado namely Guatemala, Mexican and West Indian. Among them, Mexican, quintal, jan boyce, lamb hass and pinkerton varieties are cultivated in Kiran's farm.
Choose saplings produced from seeds or through grafting. If more saplings need to be planted, plan a male plant in the middle to hasten pollination and improve production.
Pits to plant saplings should be in square shape with one metre side length and depth. Fill cow dung and organic fertilizers as base in the pit and then fill soil before planting the sapligs.
Mulching the flowerbeds with hay and leaves is good for the plant. Applying neem oil or Bordeaux mix in the first 2-3 years is good to prevent fungal infection on plants.
