‘Communist Pacha’ can be used as effective manure
Some of the weeds which farmers consider as a curse can actually be a boon, if wisely utilized. Weeds can be turned into effective fertilizers for the crops. Siam weed or devil weed which is commonly called as ‘Communist Pacha’ in Kerala is an ideal weed fertiliser.
Kerala Forest Research Institute in Peechi in Thrissur has developed a technology to make an effective manure by mixing leaves of Siam weed, crushed green gram, jaggery, cow dung and cow urine.
Also the weed is suitable for getting rid of Nima worms from the roots of vegetable crops. Add 5 kg Siam weed leaves in soil in an area of one sq. m. to control the attack of the worms.
Dhaincha (green manure crop) also is suitable for using as a fertiliser. Grow the plant and plough it down on the soil when the plant is about 50-60 days old. If 20-25 kg seeds are sown, 15-20 tons of green leaves and 75-80 kg oxygen can be provided in one hectare.
Dhaincha seeds can be purchased from national seeds corporation, farms of agricultural department and Mannuthi State Seed Farm (9496003619).
