Munnar gets its first Pista fruit
Munnar: For the first time Pista, which usually grows in the dry climates of foreign countries, has borne fruit in Kerala's cold weather at the Carmelgiri Botanical Garden at Korandakkad, Maattupetti, Munnar. The best pista in the world comes from Afghanistan and Iran.
Garden owner Joy Varghese had collected a seedling of the plant three years ago from Thrissur while on one of his routine trips to collect medicinal plants for his garden. He planted this isolating it with a rain guard to shield it from the cold Munnar weather.
The plant has borne fruit after three years and the coco like fruit is getting ready. A thick fleshy layer covers the pista. Apart from this, the garden also has around 500 medicinal plants that are slowly disappearing from the ecology of Kerala.
