Meet Shikha Lubna, the 11-year young model in agriculture
Ambalavayal (Wayanad): A class 6 student from Ambalavayal has turned her courtyard into a vegetable garden, setting a model for all youngsters. Shikha Lubna, daughter of Mankombu native Abdul Basheer and Nasriya, has been active in farming since she was in class 1. She is a student of Bathery Assumption AUP School. Shikha’s garden consists of almost all major varieties of vegetables and nearly 30 types of fruits.
Chinese cauliflower, bajji chilli, carrot, beetroot, cabbage, green chilli and other vegetables grow in Shikha’s garden. A different item among them is Palak spinach from Gulf which is used to enhance the taste of chicken curry. Shikha manages to find time for farming in morning and evening and on holidays. She takes the vegetables for household use and gives away the rest to neighbours.
Shikha follows organic method in farming and is not interested in damaging the environment. Only bio manures like cow dung, goat manure, coconut husk and wood shavings are used in the garden. Red pepper solution and garlic solution are used as pesticides. She also utilizes plastic bottles, rain coat, tyre and closet in farming, as these can be reused multiple times.
Shikha also nurtures 30 fruit plants including fig, pulasan, durian, baraba, gooseberry, custard apple and sapota. Her father Abdul Basheer, who runs a bakery in Ambalavayal, offers her all support to take up her passion for agriculture. The 11-year-old girl is too determined to pursue her career in agriculture and to complete post graduate degrees. Her ambition is to become a world renowned agriculturist and a social reformer.
