School boy wins state award for nurturing kitchen garden
Porathissery (Thrissur): Ashwin Raj, a class 7 student, never takes farming as child’s play. With his hard work and passion for agriculture, Ashwin has won this year’s state government award for the best student farmer. Many of his plants are about to be harvested.
Ashwin Raj is a student of Mahatma School in Porathissery. He has been a member of Mathrubhumi Seed Club in the school since he was in class 5. He used the seeds collected from school and Krishi Bhavan.
Ashwin’s father M A Rajkumar, mother Saritha and brother Akshay Raj also help him. Seed coordinator Deepa, Agriculture club coordinator Ambili and other teachers at school also encourage Ashwin.
The young farmer made the kitchen garden on top of his small house which is situated in a 5-cent land. He cultivates many crops including long beans, tomato, pumpkin, ash gourd, spinach, chilli, bottle gourd, beans, carrot, onion, brinjal and bitter gourd.
As soon as returning from school, Ashwin goes straight to the terrace. Then he spends time in the garden watering and taking care of the plants. He said that he grew more vegetables during the COVID lockdown period. He is excited to spend more time in the garden as the schools remain closed.
After taking the vegetables for household use, Ashwin also gives the produce to his close relatives. Apart from agriculture, Ashwin is also passionate about cooking. He has initiated a YouTube channel titled Sudus Vlog for uploading cooking and farming videos.
Ashwin’s father Rajkumar works as a security guard and mother Saritha works in a private company. His brother Akshay is a plus two student.
