Periya (Kasaragod): A different variety of long beans brought from Rajasthan gave stunning yield when it was cultivated here. Organic farmer Ayambara Kappanakkal native Narayanan planted the long beans seeds which was brought from the desert in Rajasthan. Within one month, the plant bloomed and gave good yield.
The Rajasthan long beans does not require much care as it is able to survive even in desert. Due to high immunity, pest menace also is very low. Upto five long beans grow on a single bunch on Rajasthan variety. The plant gives high yield as it belongs to a desert area, said farmer Narayanan.
It was Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK) district assistant manager Deepan Velambath who gave Narayanan seeds of this rare variety of long beans. Narayanan has the habit of collecting long beans seeds from different places in the country, cultivating them and distributing the seeds to others. He said that he has 86 types of long beans seeds including this one.
Narayanan cultivated snake gourd, ash gourd, long beans and brinjal during the lockdown period. He already sold 400 bundles of long beans harvested from his fields. As ash gourd is not cultivated in Karnataka in this season, it fetched high price, he added.
