Nutrient-rich leafy green for kitchen garden; meet Basella aka Malabar spinach
Basella or Malabar spinach is a leafy green that can be easily grown in the kitchen garden. It does not require much care and maintenance. A creeper plant, Basella can be supported with a trellis or fence. It is known as 'Vallicheera' in Malayalam.
There are two varieties of Basella, one with green vines and other with red vines. Basella can be grown by germinating its seeds or planting stem cutting. It requires only organic fertilizers. The plant is known for its medicinal properties.
Basella leaves are rich source of Vitamin A, C, iron and calcium. The leaves can be used for making snacks and delicacies. A fine paste of its stem and leaves can be applied on burn wounds to remove the marks on skin.
