Grow tomatoes easily in your backyard
Tomato is a vegetable which can be easily grown in one's backyard. It can be grown in pots, sacks, and grow-bags. The vegetable is mostly cultivated in dry regions in tropical regions and the months of June and November are most suitable for growing them.
Tomato is not widely cultivated in Kerala. With a little care, they can be grown in backyards and compounds and the plants will give good yields. Select quality variety of seeds and the seedlings are to be planted. Shakthi, Mukthi, and Anaksha are the best varieties.
Fertile soil mixed with sand and having moisture content is most suitable for tomato farming. Tomato plants are prone to drying caused by bacteria. To keep ants away, mix the seeds with ash and turmeric powder before sowing them. Cow dung powder can be added to the soil.
The seedlings can be replanted when they are 30 days old. They should be planted 60 cm apart from one another. After another month, cow dung powder and oil cake can be used as manure. The plants need support as they are delicate.
To prevent various diseases, use lime while sowing the seeds and planting the seedlings.
