Good for diabetic patients, 'Apple Ber' can be grown on terrace too
Thiruvananthapuram: Apple can be cultivated not only in cold weather but in cities of Kerala also. Vanchiyoor native George Varghese has proved this by growing apple ber at his home. The rare variety of apple is known for its medicinal qualities.
George bought the sapling of apple ber for Rs 1000 from a plant nursery in Thalassery four years ago. The apple tree starts blooming in one year of planting and the fruit will be ready to harvest within three months.
George gives only vegetable waste as fertiliser for apple ber tree. The major attraction of apple ber is that diabetic patients can eat it lavishly without worrying about sugar level. The tree can be grown on even house terrace.
Apple ber tree grows to the height of a person. The fruits are green in colour and of the size of a lemon. Apart from apple ber, George also grows China orange, grapes and different varieties of orchids on his terrace.
