The plants were full of fuits by the time it grew to four feet. The harvesting began two months ago and is still going on.
Dasan entered papaya farming without enquiring about its marketing possibilities. Now, he sells papaya in nearby schools and at shops in Pathipalam.
Upon ripening, the fruits weigh around 1.5 to 2 kilograms and have a red colour with an orange tinge. The fruits are very sweet also.
Those who eat the fruit tell Dasan that it is suitable for making juice and shakes. The papayas which belong to hybrid variety, contain four to five seeds only. They do not sprout in the natural way also.
Agriculture is a lifestyle for Dasan who is in this field for the past 35 years.
The knowledge gained as part of tradition coupled with passion for agriculture prompted Dasan to take to farming for his livelihood.
Dasan has received recognition in plantain farming also by reaping a rich harvest. He took two acres of land on lease to undertake farming as he has only 25 cents of land as his own.
As he plants plantain saplings every month, harvesting has to be done every now and then. He follows scientific methods of farming. Necessary minerals are given after conducting soil examination regularly.
Apart from organic manure, he uses organic pesticides like Namna and Menma. He also produces vegetables using organic methods. Cucumber, spinach, beans and cauliflower are cultivated by Dasan. The vegetables, which are sold in the nearby shops, are selling like hotcakes as they are organic.
Dasan participates in the farming classes conducted by Mokeri Grama Panchayath and Krishi Bhavan.
He is included in the list of main farmers of the panchayat for the past two to three years.
He also cultivates 'Uma' variety of paddy and tapioca in his 25 cents of land for his own consumption.
