Butter beans has no buyers in Kerala, huge demand in other states
Butter beans, one of the crops widely cultivated in the hilly regions in Kanthalloor, is in huge demand in other state markets, whereas Kerala markets do not show interest in this vegetable. Just as its name suggests, this beans variety outshines butter in its taste and quality and is sold for upto Rs 100-150 per kilogram.
The tourists who visit Marayur area never forget to buy butter beans no matter how high the price is. The harvest season lasts for about three months. The farmers themselves produce the seeds and cultivate it after tilling the land.
The buyers in Kerala are unaware of the qualities of butter beans which is why they hesitate to buy it. Also the Horticorp does not procure butter beans from Kanthalloor though it usually procures vegetables produced here.
Butter beans are normally available in Munnar and Marayur regions only. Madurai is the major market of the crop. Butter beans is cultivated in over 100 acres of land at Puthur, Perumala, Guhanathapuram, Adivayal and Keezhanthoor in Kanthalloor.
