Amy and her kitchen garden
Plashanal (Kottayam): Amy Thalanani, a class 4 student, is happy for getting a good yield from her farm which she started during the lockdown. Daughter of Plashanal natives Thomas and Shinsy, Amy has been a model for the children of her age. After taking the vegetables for her household, she also gives the remaining produce to the neighbours.
It was Amy’s father Thomas who motivated her to start farming as she spent most of the hours in front of television when lockdown was implemented. Though she started it as a hobby, now her kitchen garden has become useful for her family and neighbours too. The surplus vegetables are offered to the people in the neighbourhood.
When the long beans plant which she planted first bloomed, Amy’s confidence was boosted. It gave a stunning yield later and thus Amy tried growing different varieties of vegetables. Thomas helped her to make trellis to spread the vines and flowerbeds to sow the seeds. She manages to do all other chores from removing weeds to irrigating plants and applying fertilizers.
Amy spent her leisure time after online classes to take care of the vegetable garden. She grows long beans, bitter gourd, brinjal, okra, cucumber, tomato, ivy gourd and other vegetables. Amy’s sister Annmariya gives her full support in farming and related tasks. As the school reopening has been postponed, Amy is planning to expand her vegetable farming.
