Alappuzha: A woman has successfully cultivated broccoli in sandy soil. Kanjikkuzhi native Asha Shaiju planted broccoli in 600 flowerbeds. Within 75 days, broccoli was ready for harvest.
Asha followed precision farming method to grow broccoli. Chicken manure, neem cake and lime were used as base fertiliser and drip irrigation was applied for watering. Two saplings were planted in one flowerbed. One broccoli is sold for Rs 100.
Apart from this, Asha is also growing cauliflower, cabbage, green chilli and papaya in 5.5-acre land. Though Asha had completed TTC, she engages in farming as a livelihood. Asha’s husband Shaiju and daughter Ashna also helps her in farm works.
