Rare medicinal herb 'Tree Turmeric' blooms in Thrissur
Vadanappally (Thrissur): Rarely found medicinal herb Tree Turmeric (Maramanjal in Malayalam) has bloomed in Thrissur. The herb bloomed on the compound of environmentalist Vijeesh Ethayi in Engandiyoor.
Tree Turmeric, scientifically named Coscinium fenestratum, is an essential ingredient in about 60 Ayurvedic medicines. It is mainly added in medicines for jaundice, diabetes and skin diseases.
Just as its name suggests, Tree Turmeric is a creeper that grows on trees. Only 200 Tree Turmeric vines remain in the country at present. There is only one Tree Turmeric creeper in Vijeesh’s compound.
Vijeesh’s compound is rich in rare medicinal herbs and indigenous tree varieties. Children of various schools keep visiting the place to get acquainted with medicinal herbs. Forest officers also visit the place some times.
