Herbal garden made by Student Police Cadets turns into mini forest
Vithura (Thiruvananthapuram): The student police cadets of Vithura VHSS are excited to see the small herbal garden, which they nurtured in the police station compound, turning into a mini herbal forest.
The saplings were planted in the 10-cent land in Vithura Janamaithri police station compound as part of planting 10 lakh plants in connection with the 10th anniversary of Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme.
The student police managed to till the land and planted the saplings at equal distance. They did not forget to make a fence around the plants and water them regularly even amid tight schedule of service and studies. Now they are happy to see the plants growing taller than them.
Vetiver, five types of holy basil, long pepper, African coriander and several other medicinal herbs are growing in the garden here. The name and scientific name of each plant is displayed on boards. By scanning a QR code on the board, the users can also see its place of birth and uses.
The herbs were brought from Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute in Palode. Botanist Dr Mathew Dan gave guidelines to them. SI V Vinod, CPO Sainikumari, community police officers K Anwar and V S Sheeja also helped with making the herbal garden.
