Thalappuzha (Wayanad): There are many people who doubt if we can grow ginger in grow bags. BSNL employee Thavinhal Kannothumala native Sethumadhavan has found an answer to this question by successfully cultivating ginger in grow bags and is expecting attractive yields.
Sethumadhavan planted ginger in 1000 grow bags in a specially prepared area. The grow bags were filled with scientifically prepared potting mixture. He also tried plastic mulching and drip irrigation while growing ginger. He selected the ginger varieties called Rigodi and Maran.
Only organic farming methods are followed. By the time the plant attained half growth, many growing buds appeared on the bottom of the plant. Sethumadhavan also plans to expand ginger farming in grow bags. He tried this method after noticing it in some other place earlier.
An employee at the BSNL Telephone Exchange in Thalappuzha, Sethumadhavan is an organic farmer too. He cultivates many crops including banana, coffee, pepper, vegetables and fruits. He maintains a fish pond too. He manages all these activities during his leisure time. Thavinhal Agriculture officer K G Sunil and other staff also supports him.
