Young farmer converts paddy fields into sunflower farm in Alappuzha
Kanjikkuzhi (Alappuzha): Young farmer P S Sujith cultivated sunflower in 2.5 acres of land in Karikkuzhi fields with two intentions. First he wants to set up a landscape of sunflower field and then to produce and sell sunflower oil and saplings.
Tourists are always attracted to sunflower fields for photography sessions. Sujith’s sunflower farm is an attraction on the Vanaswargam-Kalathiveedu road. Sujith said that he spent about Rs 2 lakh to convert the paddy fields into sunflower farm after harvesting. Hybrid sunflower saplings were planted in 6000 flowerbeds.
Cucumber saplings also were planted in almost 6000 flowerbeds targeting Kanivellari sale in Vishu season. Sujith followed precision farming method and drip irrigation. A total of 250 sacks of chicken manure, 50 sacks of vermicompost and 100 sacks of cow dung were used as fertilizer.
