Woman turns 4.5 cent compound into foliage garden
Kuruppampadi (Ernakulam): When people look from outside, Ambika's house is an ordinary two-bedroom house. But visitors will be surprised once they enter the compound. The front yard has been turned into a beautiful garden with ornamental plants. Though people may think a gardening expert did all this, the entire work is done by Ambika herself with her creative ideas.
The garden house is located near Periyar Valley canal bund road at Iringol near Kuruppampadi theatre junction. There are many types of ornamental plants on the courtyard. Empty bottles, coconut shells, old vessels and bowls are transformed into flowerpots. Useless tubes are painted and used to decorate walls. There are over 100 varieties of plants in the garden in 4.5-cent plot.
Most of the garden plants are foliage plants. Ambika is of the opinion that foliage plants has more life than flowering plants and they require less care. She collects beautiful plants from where they are spotted. Very rarely, she also buys saplings from nurseries. Cow dung is mainly used as fertiliser. Plants are irrigated daily.
Ambika has been engaged in gardening for about 10 years. She said that people visit her garden through word publicity. Her husband Ashokan, a construction worker, and their children Aswathi, Akhil and Amal also support her in gardening works. Their relatives collect empty bottles and other materials for making flowerpots.
