Wayanad man grows over 150 varieties of orchids in garden
Wayanad: Sabu's polyhouse in Ambalavayal Pothuketti is a vast world of orchids with 150 species of orchids, including wild, native and foreign varieties, a self-designed seed lab, and cultivation method using coconut shells, bottle and coir.
Sabu proved that orchids flourish in the climate of Wayanad. Sabu, who works in a private hospital, started orchid farming in his leisure time. Sabu currently grows 2,500 orchids of 150 varieties that include species collected from Wayanad forests. Coconut shells, bottles and plastic objects have been used effectively for growing orchids.
Sabu found that fertilisation is possible in orchids through a specialised pollination method. A special polyhouse has been set up for this purpose. The young entrepreneur is preparing to do more experiments once he gets government support.
