Shoe flower or hibiscus is a very common garden plant in the houses in Kerala. It normally requires no particular care and maintenance. However, when it is grown in flowerpots, we have to give special care.
Choose water permeable soil to grow shoe flower in pots.
While fertilising, mix soil with chicken manure and place it as a layer in the pot.
Dry banana peel well and make it into a fine powder and add in the soil.
Soak banana peel in water and pour it at the bottom of the plant.
Watering is required on alternate days only.
Shoe flower blooms well only if it is properly fertilised.
It is ideal to mix top layer soil in the pot with fertiliser and putting it back to the pot.
Do not prune show flower plant during summer and monsoon.
Attack of insects affect blooming and reduce size of flowers.
Bugs and worms can be manually picked from the plant.
Spray soap water to kill mealybugs.
Mix two teaspoons of shampoo in a bottle of water and shake it well. Spray it on the plant to get rid of pests.
Mix hand wash liquid in water and spray on the plant after 7 pm for avoiding insects.
