Violet iris - The queen of gardens
Violet iris is an attractive flowering plant widely cultivated in states like Meghalaya, Assam, Manipur, Himachal Pradesh and Tripura.
The plant is much similar to the water hyacinth in our place. Violet iris is indigenous to Khasi mountain range. Though it is a wild flower, the plant is a popular guest in the gardens here. People generally perceive violet iris as a symbol of happiness and prosperity.
The flowers of the plant bloom in dark red, pale red, yellow and violet colours. Its leaves possess medicinal properties. People in many states in India use the juice of violet iris plant’s leaves and roots as a medicine for different diseases.
Majority of the houses in Assam and Tripura grow violet iris in their gardens. The plant can be grown either by sowing seeds or by planting its branches. The climate of some places in Kerala are suitable for the growth of violet iris.
