Tips to scientifically pack Anthurium and Orchid
Orchid and Anthurium are two flowering plants that have high scope in the market and in export sector. Once the flowers are harvested, they have to be treated scientifically in order to make them ready for export.
When 50 percent of the flowers on the bunch begin to blossom, they can be harvested. They can be kept at a temperature of 8-13 degree celsius for 10-14 days. The flower stems should be covered in tissue paper or wet cotton while packing and exporting.
Once they reach the destination, cut the stems slightly and dip in fresh water added with some sugar. Sprinkle some water frequently using a sprayer. The flowers should be kept away from sunlight, heat, fan and air conditioner. Spray some cold water on the flowers 15 minutes before packing.
The flower stems of Anthurium should be strong. Spadix and florets of the flower should be blossomed well. Flowers can be kept for 3-5 weeks at a temperature of 13 degree celsius by dipping the stems in cold water.
Chemicals can be used to keep the flowers fresh. Mix 73.0 ppm sodium chloride, 500 ppm benzoic acid or one percent 7 Up soft drink in one litre of water and keep the flower stems in this mixture to preserve them fresh for two weeks.
The cut flowers should be kept away from heat and cold. Spray water frequently. Dip the dried flowers in lukewarm water to revive them. The flowers can be kept fresh by applying some wax also.
The moisture on the flowers should be removed before packing. Bacteria and fungus attacks are likely when the flowers are packed with moisture. Ensure that the flowers are not affected with bacteria or fungus while collecting them from the gardens. If detected with infection, sprinkle some fungicide on the plant.
Before packing, sprinkle some sugar solution or anti-ethylene compound on the flowers to prevent ethylene emission. The flowers should be packed in folded and wrinkled boxes and also ensure proper air circulation inside of it.
Flowers need to be kept in 98-98.5 percent atmospheric humidity till exported. Nowadays flowers are transported via flights to ensure fast delivery at the destination. These flights have special chambers to keep the flowers.
