Thousand petal lotus blooms in terrace garden of Thrippunithura house
Thrippunithura (Ernakulam): Ganesh Ananthakrishnan is all excited to see the full bloomed 'thousand petal lotus' in his terrace garden. There is one more bud ready to bloom shortly. Though we have heard of the lotus flower that has thousand petals (Sahasradala Padmam) in myths, this flower is reportedly blooming for the first time in South India.
Ganesh Kumar Ananthakrishnan, an employee of Rubber Board in Muvattupuzha, is maintaining a terrace garden at his house in Thrippunithura. The rare lotus is growing in a plastic container. Ganesh is interested to study about lotus flowers, the national flower of India and cross breed different varieties of lotus plants.
When he was working in Tripura, he had created a lotus garden in the compound. His friend had gifted him the seed of a thousand petal lotus from China. He planted it in the garden and it bloomed well. Later, he became curious about the single colour of lotus flower. Plants including rose has different colours while lotus is always pink.
Once Ganesh came to know about golden lotus used for rituals in Madhura Meenakshi temple while attending an agriculture seminar in Tamil Nadu. Thus he managed to cross breed the yellow lotus seed also. He gifted the seed to his friend Somnath Pal in Maharashtra. The plant grew there and yellow flowers bloomed.
The first lotus he developed through pollination was named after his mother Alamelu. Having a passion for lotus flowers, Ganesh is continuing his research and experiments with the plant and develops rare varieties like the thousand petal lotus now bloomed in the garden.
