Teacher makes sunflower field on 15-cent land charmed by its beauty
Anchal (Kollam): Offering a visual treat to all, a teacher has planted sunflower plants on his compound. Padinjattinkara native Ranjith Rajan made the flower field on a 15-cent land close to his house. He started growing sunflower after seeing the vast sunflower fields in Tamil Nadu. Though he started cultivating sunflower out of curiosity, it gives happiness, he opined.
Apart from sunflowers, Ranjith also cultivates rare varieties of fruit plants including noni, baraba, pulasan, Chinese orange, egg fruit, soursop, sapota, star fruit, passion fruit, custard apple, rose apple, guava, nutmeg, various types of mango trees and Chinese dwarf coconut tree on his compound.
Earlier, Ranjith used to grow banana in the field. Now tapioca and turmeric are mainly cultivated. The sunflower farming also helped him make Pookkalam during Onam. Rajith added that he cultivated sunflower not on a commercial basis, but for the love of flowers.
