Rs 50,000 from cactus garden? This lady will tell you how
When vegetable or flower gardens on house terraces are becoming a common sight here, a woman hailing from Malappuram decided to make her terrace a garden of cacti.
Nisha Siraj who resides near Tirur MES Central School has been growing a garden of over 10,000 cactus plants belonging to 20 varieties for 12 years on her house terrace.
Nisha’s father-in-law late Aboobackar of Tharayankandathil house used to maintain cacti at his house. As she developed a liking for the desert plant watching this, Nisha started a cactus garden on terrace when they made their own house.
It was her husband Siraj, a businessman, who suggested that she should make it a business. Cacti are grown in bowls and cups. She earns upto Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 as profit by selling cacti. Nisha’s father Khalid, a former photographer, also support her venture.
Cactus pots are used for decorating drawing rooms and wedding parties and can be placed on study tables and dining tables. Also gift items are designed by pasting photos on the cactus pots.
Major advantage of cactus decorations is its reusability. When flowers are used for decoration, they will be dried out easily. But cactus can be reused at other events. Other types of plants need more water to grow well whereas cacti need very little quantity of water.
